Title 1A Program
Improving Basic Programs
Title 1A provides financial assistance to school districts and schools with high numbers or percentages of children from low income families to help ensure that all children meet challenging state academic standards. The allocations to qualifying schools are determined by the number of children who qualify for free/reduced meals at those schools.
Title 1A funds support a number of staff members and activities, which may include specialists or coaches focusing on reading or math, instructional assistants, professional development, family engagement activities, PreKindergarten, McKinney-Vento Homeless Liaison and support for students who are homeless and in foster care, summer programming, and more.
Program models: School-Wide and Targeted Assistance
School-wide programs prioritize school-wide reform strategies. A school is allowed to use funds from Title 1A and other Federal education program resources to upgrade the entire educational program of the school in order to raise academic achievement for all students.
Targeted assistance programs provide additional support to a select group of students rather than for overall school improvement. Students are selected to receive additional support, typically in reading, based upon student’s assessment scores. Those students who are at greatest risk of not reaching grade-level achievement are prioritized for receiving Title 1A support.
Family Engagement
Parents/guardians are an important part of Title 1A. Each Title 1A school has a family engagement plan to ensure activities are planned to include parents/guardians. Schools also have school/family compacts, or agreements, that share goals, expectations, and responsibilities of school staff, students and parents/guardians in students’ success. Please contact your school’s Title 1A staff or the district Title 1A Coordinator if you would like to serve on a committee, have questions about the qualifications of teachers and instructional assistants, or have questions about Title 1A services.
RSD Title 1A Family Engagement Policy – IGBC
PreKindergarten
The Title 1A PreK is a federally funded program for 4-year olds (by September 1) who qualify based on literacy and Healthy Beginnings screeners. Screenings are offered in the spring of each school year to determine participation for the upcoming school year. This program prioritizes children who need additional support gaining Kindergarten readiness skills.
Private Schools
The Redmond School District partners with a number of non-profit private schools in Redmond, as required by Title 1A regulations, to provide supplementary reading support for eligible private school students. The service model is developed in consultation with representatives from each private school and is designed to assist students in meeting grade level standards.
